The place
Northeast of Fredericksburg, the Colorado River is dammed into the Highland Lakes — LBJ, Marble Falls, Travis, and the rest — a string of blue water rimmed by pink-granite hills. Marble Falls is the hub: a lakeside town with restaurants, a historic downtown, and easy access to the water.
In spring, nearby Muleshoe Bend and the roadsides around Burnet (the “Bluebonnet Capital of Texas”) put on one of the state’s great wildflower shows. The rest of the year it’s boating, swimming, and granite-hill scenery.

Muleshoe Bend in spring
A LCRA recreation area on Lake Travis that turns solid blue with bluebonnets in late March — one of the most photographed wildflower spots in Texas.
Granite country
Drive out toward Llano and Enchanted Rock through some of the oldest exposed rock in Texas; stop for famous barbecue in Llano on the way.
