A billion-year-old dome of pink granite you can climb in an afternoon — and one of the darkest night skies in Texas after dark.
The place
Enchanted Rock is a giant pink-granite dome rising about 425 feet above the surrounding country — the exposed top of a vast batholith that cooled underground a billion years ago. The Tonkawa believed the rock was enchanted; on cool nights it really does creak and tick as the stone contracts.
The state natural area protects the dome and miles of trail around it. The Summit Trail is a short, steep scramble to the top; the Loop Trail circles the base. It’s wildly popular — day passes sell out on spring weekends, so reserve ahead.

How to spend your time
Hike the Loop Trail
Four miles around the base through oak and grassland, with side trails to the boulder caves and the quieter back side of the dome.
Stay for the stars
The park is an International Dark Sky Park. On clear nights the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye — bring a blanket and let your eyes adjust.
