Texas is not supposed to have a fall, and for most of the state that is true. The exception is a set of steep, damp canyons on the Sabinal River in Bandera and Real counties, where a stand of Uvalde bigtooth maple got stranded when the climate warmed after the last ice age and simply never left.
Lost Maples State Natural Area protects them. For about three weeks a year they go orange and scarlet in a way that makes people who grew up in Vermont stop and take a photograph. The rest of the year it is quietly one of the best hiking parks in the state.
The timing moves. Plan around that.
Peak usually lands somewhere between the last days of October and Thanksgiving, most often in the first two weeks of November. It depends on September rain and the timing of the first real cold snap, which means anyone who gives you a date in August is guessing. Including us.
The fix is easy: park staff post a fall foliage report every week from mid-October. Read it, pick your weekend late, and buy the day pass the moment you commit. November weekends sell out, and the park closes to new arrivals when it hits capacity — often by nine in the morning.
Go on a Tuesday. Same maples, a tenth of the people, and a parking space.
It is not only the maples
If Lost Maples is full or the timing slips, the region has other color. Bald cypress along the Frio at Garner State Park and along the upper Guadalupe west of Kerrville turn a deep rust-red. Spanish oak and flameleaf sumac light up roadcuts everywhere. Pedernales Falls has cypress and oak over the limestone slabs and a fraction of the crowd.
- Lost Maples East Trail — about 4.6 miles through the maple bottoms and up to a canyon-rim overlook. Steep in the middle, rocky throughout.
- Garner State Park — Frio River cypress and the Old Baldy climb, 45 minutes south.
- TX‑39 west of Kerrville toward Hunt — a slow river drive under turning cypress.
- Pedernales Falls — quieter color an hour from Austin.
- Colorado Bend — Gorman Falls and a spring-fed canyon that stays green while everything around it turns.
Whichever you pick: fill the tank before you leave Bandera, Utopia, or Kerrville, download offline maps because the canyons have no service, and take a jacket. November mornings out there are properly cold, and the afternoons are not.
